I’ve since lost count of the number of times the question ” Is the battle against corruption being won?,” which keeps coming up in talks and societal engagements. Predictably, in some, one even hears the eager question “is there hope for the economic future of Kenya?” sadly, I’ve heard some conclude “seriously, shouldn’t you just forget all this and continue your life quietly?”
During a time of national moral crisis, exemplified by rampant CORRUPTION, this Lent we seeks to nudge every Kenyan of goodwill to reclaim, shall we say, the long-lost moral fiber of this country! Especially at this time when we are dealing with a gravy train of toxic legacies as the country continues to plunge into a series of level 4 corruption deals, while citizens sit and peer at each other – almost certainly cluelessly.
If only Bishop Alexander Muge, Rev. Njoya, Bishop Okullu….among others could see what has become of their successors, who continue to maintain a studious silence even as the CORRUPTION menace grows ! – Leaders in the Church where are you???
Efforts to hold Corruption perpetrators accountable, predictably, tend to frustratingly fizzle-out like trying to hug smoke – Peter Ouma Muga
While the current crop of political leaders promise solutions to eradicate the decay, ridiculously, the remedies seem to elude them. Efforts to hold the perpetrators accountable, increasingly and predictably, tend to frustratingly fizzle-out like trying to hug smoke. All happening, just in time, for the public, yet again, to be treated to the next scum which arrives with predictable frequency bigger, more blatant, than the previous.
This situation leaves – even the most undiscerning of – us to conclude, that while we want our current leaders to be heroes, we want them to be perfect. The truth is, they are none of these, they are human, tainted, vulnerable – and a large proportion, are even corrupt. And that too, its a fact of life pretty much across the political spectrum.
Some may have even sanitized corruption into something called “handshake” [in other words, join me or look the other way] or whatever you think “handshake” means to you!
Little surprise, that even this Rangwe Constituency NG CDF Report details some projects that dont exist on the ground – the water tanks are nowhere, Purchase of a transformer co-funding with REA for Kochia Market which does not exist ……
And so, while others might steal a little, but create more value in the process ~ in the marathon race of development some counties [individuals] are in the leading pack ~ sprinting away!! While others, are nothing but greedy thieves ~ like in Homabay county ~ where the county administration notably, to date, has failed to complete a single public project to its credit since the onset of devolution seven years later and counting – and seems comfortably at the tail end of the development marathon! Facts validated by none other than the Auditor General, Edward Ouko. while other institutions [MCAs, The Senate, DCI, EACC …and so on] mandated to check this continue to snore!
While the likes of HomaBay Countys, Governor Cyprian Awiti, continues to leave many of us sickened and sad from the corruption, incompetence and maladministration demonstrated so far. The County leadership’s misplaced priorities in the use of public funds is telling. More recently observed in the alleged “buy off” of the gubernatorial election validation process rather than sink boreholes, equip hospitals facilities, build roads among others….#HomaBayLives Matter #HomaBayDevelopmentMatters.
OUR PRAYERS THIS SEASON OF #LENT …….
Yet, WE CAN’T STOP! AND WON’T STOP giving night-sweats to our spiritual AND political LEADERS.
We must continue to remind them of their solemn obligation not to shade the truth. Even as we continue to pray for OURSELVES also this #Lent.
I trust you will slowly read this letter by El Salvador Catholic Bishop, Oscar Romero, in Ash Wednesday 1979. Who was later shot fatally at the alter while saying mass.
Lent seeks to awaken in the heart of every Christian a keen awareness of what it means to be a Christian. I pray the letter touches you to reflect on how faithful you have been to your obligations as a leader and responsible citizen.
